But it was when I ventured out, away from the scooter horns, that I truly fell in love with the wild life and natural wonders in Viet Nam.

Ha Long Bay, Quang Ninh

Ha Long Bay presents an iconic scenery of thousands of limestone islands rising from emerald waters. The landscape is otherworldly and looks like it’s straight out of a fantasy film. Picture yourself on a traditional boat, gliding silently between giant, jungle-topped pillars of rock. It’s a sight that stays with you long after you’ve returned to shore.

My best advice is to choose an overnight cruise, specifically a two-night one. This allows you to get away from the main tourist routes that crowd the bay’s entrance. You’ll find quieter spots for kayaking through hidden lagoons or swimming in the refreshing water. Waking up to the sight of mist-shrouded karsts from your cabin window is an unforgettable experience.

Sapa’s Mountains and Rice Terraces, Lao Cai

Sapa is a stunning picture of rolling hills covered in a patchwork of rice terraces that change color with the seasons. Cuc Phuong National Park, Ninh Binh

Cuc Phuong holds the special title of being the first Vietnam national park. It is a sanctuary for biodiversity, known for its ancient trees that have stood for a thousand years. The scale of these underground wonders is hard to comprehend until you see them for yourself. It is a world of giant stalactites and stalagmites.

I suggest visiting Paradise Cave to see its stunning formations that stretch for kilometers. A boat trip into Phong Nha Cave, where the river flows right through the mountain, is another classic activity. This region’s natural beauty is matched by its rich history. Son Doong Cave, Quang Binh

Son Doong is the ultimate adventure prize in Vietnam. This is the world’s largest cave, a place so massive it has its own jungle and climate inside. Sunlight filters down through giant sinkholes, allowing lush forests to grow deep within the earth. It’s a surreal and humbling sight.

A visit here is not a casual trip. It requires a costly, multi-day expedition that books up years in advance. The trek is physically demanding, involving river crossings, jungle hiking, and climbing. Climbing the stone steps, you will find hidden caves with beautiful Buddhist sanctuaries inside, lit by shafts of natural light. The panoramic views of the coastline from the top are spectacular.

My tip is to take the elevator up the main mountain and then walk down. This saves you some energy for walking through the various caves and pagodas. Also, be sure to wear good shoes because the marble steps can be quite slippery, especially after it rains.

Bach Ma National Park, Thua Thien Hue

Bach Ma is a former French colonial hill station that is now a beautiful national park. The cool climate is a welcome relief from the coastal heat. The park has winding trails that lead to stunning viewpoints, the beautiful Five Lakes, and the towering Do Quyen Waterfall.

I recommend staying overnight in the park if you have the time. This allows you to experience the peacefulness of the forest after the day-trippers have left. Waking up high above the clouds as the sun rises over the mountains is a truly special moment.

Son Tra Peninsula, Da Nang

Son Tra Peninsula is a lush nature reserve that juts out into the sea and is often called the “green lung” of Da Nang. It offers a quick and easy escape into nature right from the city. The winding roads are a joy to travel on, with amazing views around every corner.

One of the best experiences is riding a scooter up the winding roads to the giant Lady Buddha statue, which overlooks the city and the bay. The real thrill for me was trying to spot the rare and colorful Red-shanked douc langurs in the trees. Seeing these beautiful primates in their natural habitat was a highlight of my time in Da Nang.

Natural Wonders In Southern Vietnam

The South is a region defined by water. Life revolves around the mighty Mekong River and its countless tributaries. Further afield, idyllic tropical islands offer a perfect escape. I have a fun memory of renting a plastic sled to slide down the big dunes. It felt a little silly at first, but it was incredibly fun. I recommend giving it a try. The feeling of gliding down the sandy slopes with the wind in your hair is a simple joy you won’t forget.

Tram Chim National Park, Dong Thap

Tram Chim is a massive wetland reserve that is a paradise for birdwatchers. The park is a vital habitat for hundreds of bird species. During the dry season, the water levels recede, concentrating the fish and attracting huge flocks of birds.

The most incredible sight is the thousands of birds that gather here. It is also the best place in Vietnam to have a chance of seeing the majestic, endangered Sarus Crane. These tall, elegant birds are a truly breathtaking sight, and seeing them is a special reward for any nature lover.

Phu Quoc Island, Kien Giang

Phu Quoc is Vietnam’s slice of island paradise. The island is known for its beautiful white-sand beaches, calm turquoise waters, and largely undeveloped, jungle-covered interior. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind after traveling through the rest of the country.

My favorite thing to do is rent a motorbike to find your own secluded beach away from the main resorts on Long Beach. There are so many quiet coves to discover.
