The pagoda’s story starts back in 1886. The monk named Thích Ngộ Chí founded the original temple. He came from Vinh Xuong, a district in Khanh Hoa province. He built the first version of the pagoda on another mountain, a smaller one that was also nearby.

At that time, it was just a simple thatched-roof cottage. It was a quiet place for him to practice his beliefs and teach others. I often try to picture what that first simple structure looked like, surrounded by nature.

Relocation and Development

So, what changed? A massive cyclone hit the area in the year 1900. The storm unfortunately destroyed the original pagoda. After this event, the monk decided to move the entire structure down to its current location at the foot of Trại Thủy Hill.

He renamed the pagoda Long Sơn, which means “Dragon’s Mountain”. Over the years, many head monks have managed and renovated the pagoda. They made it into the beautiful complex we see today. It is a place that has grown and changed with the city, which I think is pretty amazing.

Now, let’s talk about what you will see when you visit. The pagoda is not just one building, but a whole collection of beautiful structures. Each one has its own special features.

The Main Temple Complex

When you first walk in, you arrive at the main temple area. The architecture is a beautiful example of classic Vietnamese design. I love the intricate dragon mosaics that decorate the roof and entrance. The whole place feels very welcoming and serene.

Inside the main hall, you will find many statues and a large bronze Buddha figure. The air is often filled with the gentle scent of incense. It is an active place of worship, so you will see local people coming to pray. It is a very authentic and moving space to be in.

The Path Up Trại Thủy Hill

To see the main attractions, you need to climb up Trại Thủy Hill. There are 193 steps in total to reach the very top. Don’t worry, the climb is not too difficult. There are places to rest along the way, and the path is shaded by large, leafy trees.

As you walk up, you feel like you are leaving the busy city behind. The sounds of traffic fade away and are replaced by birdsong. I think the journey up the steps is part of the experience. It builds a sense of anticipation for what you are about to see.

The Marble Statue Of Buddha

About 44 steps up, you will find a beautiful marble statue of a reclining Buddha. The statue is 17 meters long and shows the Buddha entering Nirvana. It’s a very peaceful and impressive sight.

Behind the statue is a large mural depicting monks in a garden. The details in the sculpture and the mural are incredible. This spot is a favorite for photos, and it’s a nice place to take a break before continuing your climb.

The White Gautama Buddha Statue

At the very top of the hill is the iconic white Buddha. This statue is huge, standing 24 meters tall. The Buddha sits on a lotus blossom, and you can see it from all over Nha Trang. It really is a powerful symbol for the city.

The base of the statue is also very meaningful. It contains portraits of monks who gave their lives to protest the persecution of Buddhists. This adds a deep layer of history and reverence to the site. The view of the city from up here is absolutely breathtaking.

Dai Hong Chung Bell

A little further down from the white Buddha, you will find a large bell tower. Inside hangs the Dai Hong Chung Bell. It was a gift from Buddhists in Hue and weighs 1,500 kilograms.
